There are several different tools used for navigation. To get from point A to point B, the tool that most often comes to mind is a map. The map shows you where you are going and ways of getting there.
The problem comes when you are looking at a map and you are uncertain where you are. Most stationary maps have a little icon indicating where you are on the map. This is more important than it sounds.
Without knowing where you are, you can’t really know where to go. Oh, sure, you can have an idea of your destination, but you’ll have no clue as to how to actually get there. You may have a general, vague idea to head in a certain direction, but without some input as to where you are, it amounts to guesswork. (Or intuition. But, intuition counts as input so it doesn’t matter here.)
What is the importance of all of this? When you are looking to improve your life, you may have an idea or two as to what you would like your life to be like (the destination), but unless you know yourself well, you won’t be able to get there very efficiently. With most of us, we have a general idea as to where we are on the map. Yeah, we’re in this general area. So, if we keep heading north, we should reach the main street. We take that east to self actualization, and ride that all the way to the life we desire.
There is nothing wrong with this approach. We all use it at varying points in our lives and in different ways. But if you can take the time to get your bearings, you may realize that you can cut across on Meditation avenue to get around the traffic jam, and you’ll get there much faster than if you waded through Rush Hour with your doubts and your walls of resistance, poisons, and who knows what else. There are shortcuts. Most people just don’t recognize them.
