When we’re talking about hitting walls of inner resistance, ways of getting past them are irrelevant unless you can recognize what’s going on. Unless you know there’s a wall there, you won’t even think to take steps to get past it. That’ll keep you on the same treadmill you’ve been on for who knows how long.
To that end, here are some signs/symptoms to tell that you’ve just hit a wall
- If you’ve started something new and had some success, but suddenly things are getting difficult or complicated, pay attention.
- If you find yourself maneuvered into a busy schedule that precludes what you know is important, watch out.
- If you have to force yourself to do something that you know will benefit you, you have some thinking to do.
- If you are contemplating various activities or paths to take, and you reflexively shy away from one out of some kind of fear, write it down.
- If you are spending all your time looking for a shortcut around the Big Scary method, then you know you’ve found a hot spot. Check the underlying emotions.
- If you have tried doing something over and over and over again but you just couldn’t follow through, or keep with it, you know you’ve found some resistance.
- If you notice that your very thoughts are carefully conditioned to avoid certain directions because they are too scary, that is an indicator of resistance.
- If you are willing to let a cherished matter “wither on the vine” or be run over in defeat rather than face even the thought of a valid method to keep it going, then you just ran right into it.
- If you notice that someone does something that you deemed un-doable, and you know there’s no common-sense reason why you shouldn’t be able to do so as well, you’ve just uncovered some resistance.
- If you hear a very faint whispering in your consciousness after a failure of some kind that it is expected and/or better this way, then you have almost certainly run into a wall of resistance.
Not really part of the list, but if you happen to have encounter with your Shadow, then metaphorically speaking, you just grabbed the brass ring. Here is where acceptance and letting go comes in real handy. The Shadow has the potential to be a great ally, but that’s a topic big enough to be talked about some other time.
It is important to note that I’m not implying unethical activity. Letting a financial goal slip by because you were unwilling to steal, cheat, or rob isn’t really a matter of inner resistance. Use common sense with this list.
If you can learn to map out what your walls of resistance are, you can get a better handle on how you want to proceed. As you start clearing them away, you will find more but that is ok, simply because as you reclaim more of yourself, you will realize the fact that no wall can hold you back indefinitely.
