I find that I write about awareness quite a bit. Awareness is an important step because it is the first step. You can’t do anything about a situation unless you are aware of it.
After awareness comes the will to act. You may not feel you have the ability to make your desired changes, but you can work towards your goal. You can smooth the path so as to make your future attempts easier.
If you have the will to act, then go for it. You may make it, you may not. The fact that you are moving in the right direction is what is important. Maintain awareness during this time. If you find that you are slipping, ask yourself what is going on. Are you afraid of what happens if you succeed? Does the old status-quo serve you somehow? Is there some other factor that is making it unnecessarily difficult? Are you noticing any benefits in your inner world or the world around you?
If you can find something that is getting in your way, that you have the power to correct, then do so. Keep going as long as you can.
If you run into a wall, keep working. Don’t give up while you have strength. Look for ways to get past the wall. Try getting creative. Remember, every step in the right direction serves you, even if it’s a small one.
If you run out of steam, and are unable to complete the change, it is important to remember the following:
- Don’t beat yourself up. Real change is hard, and facing down your inner demons is harder still. Just because you don’t have the muscle yet doesn’t mean you won’t have it in the future.
- Do an autopsy. Have a look at what factors made it easy for you and what factors made it harder for you.
- Think back and remember the point where you were closest to reaching your goal. Remembering that moment where you were almost there will be a powerful aid in the future.
- Think of any system requirements you may be missing. If you think that gaining perseverance, or clarity, or self-acceptance will make the change easier, then ramp up that attribute until you’re ready to tackle it again.
- Remember that the status quo has been broken. On the surface, things may appear to be the same. However, you have had the valuable experience of starting the change. You now know that the current state is not the way that is has to be.
Change isn’t instant. Nor is it effortless. Anything you wish to do isn’t simply going to appear out of nothingness as soon as you have the whim. Awareness is the necessary first step, but it also sets you up for the necessary second step because as you are aware of the situation, you immediately and automatically begin to make corrections to achieve your desire.
