Poison is, as I mentioned in other posts, defined as anything which dulls or kills the spirit. I have gone into it in What’s Your Poison, but wanted to provide some hints that you might be feeling the effects. Here are some simple signs that can point to what ails you:

  1. If it leaves you drained emotionally, thinking that topics that are normally important to you simply aren’t that important at the moment, that’s a clue.
  2. If you are putting massive time and energy into something that isn’t truly benefiting you, that’s a big sign.
  3. If you know that you don’t really enjoy/like the situation, but feel that you have no choice, then it’s time to make some hard decisions.
  4. If you can quit “any time you want” but somehow never do, watch out.
  5. If your goals and dreams are clouded and distant after something, you might want to re-consider the value of what you just exposed yourself to. Weakening your resolve to brighten the future is dangerous.
  6. Anything that causes you to show your love less than you should, is a big risk.
  7. Anything which offers a meaningless diversion, instead of replenishment or rejuvenation is suspect.
  8. Anything that isolates or closes you off from the world can be dangerous.
  9. Anything or anyone who makes you feel like you are unworthy or not good enough is almost certainly poisonous.
  10. Anything that moves you in a direction other than where your spirit wants to go or away from your purpose.

Of course, this list is neither definitive, nor comprehensive. Working a long day doing work that is spiritually rewarding and/or moves you in the right direction can leave you frazzled at the end of the day. These are just examples to help point out what ails you. By far the best way to determine if something is poisonous is to simply ask yourself. You will know. You may not have the courage or ability to change it, yet, but you will know. As you start moving away from what kills your spirit, you will automatically find what feeds your spirit. As your spirit is nourished by fulfilling your true needs, and the poisons of old fall away, you will find that you are much more effective and much better off than you could have imagined in the bad old days.
