In any topic, there is a group of words specific to that topic. Often the words are normal, just with added meaning. I’ve been planning a “Glossary” page, but here’s a few for starters

  • Existential Compound Interest. I use this one a lot, and it’s even a category. Exestential compound interest is basically a description of compound interest effects applied to living your life. Just as invested money becomes more and more profitable over time, so does work on oneself. The more you get in touch with who you are, and the longer you spend at this purpose, the greater the rewards.
  • Poison. Simply put, anything that kills you. I take it a bit further and say “anything that kills your spirit”. Each of us have our poisons. Some we have in common, and some we don’t . Your poison might be too much TV. Or perhaps something unhealthy that you eat or drink. Perhaps you have a friend or loved one that leaves you drained and too tired to pick yourself up. Anything that dulls your spirit is a “poison”, and should be handled as such.
  • Internal Monitoring. This is the art and practice of watching yourself. This can be a hard practice to acquire, but it is invaluable, because it provides you with opportunities to change how events play out. Say for example, you are going to slip right back into your poison. If you are monitoring yourself, you will recognize what is going on. This in-and-of itself will not necessarily give you the power to overcome that poison, but it is an important first step.

  • System Requirements. Any piece of technology you can think of has requirements in order for it to operate. Most people have encountered this when it comes to installing software. Improving your inner world is much the same. Certain techniques will have requirements. If you want to use a technique, but don’t have the requirements, you can use this to direct your learning focus so that eventually you can use that technique. I wrote more about it here.
  • NLP. NLP stands for “Neuro-Linguistic Programming”. This is basically the practice and process of using sensory information to talk to your mind “on its own terms”. This is echoed in our language with phrases like “a flash of inspiration” or “this makes my skin crawl” and the like. Used properly, NLP techniques can be quite helpful in removing unwanted patterns of thought, or re-enforcing patterns that you do want.
